Why would you opt for an office chair with armrests?
Online you see nothing but office chairs with armrests. It almost seems as if there is no other choice than opting for an office chair with armrests, but why is that?
What are the benefits of using office chairs with armrests?
Armrests on chairs make a big difference when it comes to comfort. They offer support for your arms and shoulders. They also help you to adopt a good posture while you work. You can use the armrests to let your elbows rest and pause more often without having to worry about getting up every few minutes.
The benefits of using an office chair with armrests are numerous, so it is important that you do some research before you buy one, so that you know which functions are important for your needs.
With armrests you get out of the chair more easily. They also help with your position by supporting your arms so that they do not dangling or resting on a part of the desk. Neck and shoulder complaints often arise here when this does not happen at the right height.
But I now use armrests but still get bothered by my neck how is that possible?
The rule at Armruningen is that they have to connect exactly to your elbow height so that you are in total rest and do not tighten or stiffen anything unnecessarily. Often when you have armrests and set it too high, complaints can arise.

When should I choose no armrests:
- You use the office chair less than 2 hours a day
- You have too little space (control rooms, sewing machine such)
- Factory work (armrests can be more an obstacle here)
- Kassa chairs (here are often an obstacle)
When should I opt for an office chair with armrests?
- You use the office chair more than 2 hours a day
- You must meet the Occupational Health and Safety guidelines (NPR or NEN)
- Have your physical complaints (this to offer more support)
What requirements must the armrests at least meet to be ergonomic?
NPR 1813: 2016, armresters must be at least 150 millimeters long and 20 millimeters wide. Both the forearm and the elbow must therefore receive sufficient support. This standard also ensures that the office chair can be properly joined at the desk. The distance between the front of the armrest and the front of the seat must be at least 200 millimeters for this. In addition, it is important that the armrest is adjustable in height between 200 and 300 millimeters and in width between 360 and 510 millimeters. In other words, there are quite a lot of demands on a good office chair with armrests.
This is a good thing too! For example, an armrest that is only up and down is anything but the solution. Your armrest must be at least in width, height, depth adjustable to be seen as an ergonomic. So keep this in mind if you are going to choose a office chair!
