Is your office chair deductible?
According to the tax authorities Is your desk or office chair if it is for home use is not deductible! There are exceptions! Do you use your owner -occupied home for more than 90% of the time to do your work? Then you can deduct these costs. Is it less than unfortunately not ...
But I live in a rental house?
Then there are some points that you have to observe:
In this situation your workspace belongs to your business assets. That means for you:
- The rental right of the workspace belongs to your business assets. You do this once at the start of the company or at the first use of the building for your company.
- You can deduct costs for the workspace annually. Do you use the workspace for your company and for private life? Then you can only deduct the costs that you have incurred for your company.
- Do you get rent allowance? Then you have to allocate a proportional part to the use of the workspace. You count that part in the profit. Example: Imagine uses 1/3 part of your home for the company. In that case you also count 1/3 part of the housing allowance until the profit.
These are costs such as: rental costs, energy costs, wallpaper and interior painting, upholstery and present inventory (desk, cupboard, lamp).
But what when it comes to our office?
If it is a business office space then you can of course deduct it. Note that the furniture is not used for its own affairs, then it is not allowed again. Since working from home, this has become quite a difficult discussion.
But I am in paid employment?
Personnel who works at home can come to his employer for a reimbursement of certain office furniture and computer material. A condition is that you normally also have this type of office design in the workplace.
It must therefore be about materials that do not exceed the needs of home work in an unreasonable way. For example, an expensive design desk is not necessary. Large computer figure screens that serve to play, not either. Employers therefore stick to a reasonable maximum price on all furniture and devices for which they want to reimburse their employees. Often an HR department already has the amount known you just have to ask.
Which furniture or office material is it about?
Think of a desk chair, a desk table, a desk cabinet, a functional desk lamp, a second computer screen, a printer scanner, a keyboard, a mouse, a foot mouse, a trackpad or trackball and headphones.
Specific equipment that people with disabilities need to be able to work quickly with the PC is also eligible. This intervention has no influence on the amount of the home work allowance.
Office furniture made available by employer
Your boss can also choose to make his office furniture available. That can be tax -free. The tax administration accepts that certain goods are necessary to perform the professional activity at home in a normal way. If you are allowed to keep the goods on when you leave or after the end of the home work, the situation will change. Then he must pay tax on the "benefit of all kinds" on the real residual value.
